Decade-long slumber ends as Satoshi-era Bitcoin address reawakens

A Bitcoin address that has been inactive since the early days of Bitcoin, commonly referred to as the Satoshi era, recently became active after 10 long years. This wallet, which held 687 BTC worth around $43.9 million, transferred its holdings to two different wallets on May 6. The first transfer was 625.43 BTC to an address beginning with bc1qky, while the remaining 61.9 BTC went to bc1qdc.

When wallets that have been dormant for a long time, particularly from the early days when Bitcoin was founded and Satoshi Nakamoto was active, show any movement of funds, it tends to pique the curiosity of the crypto community. The term “Satoshi era” relates to the period when Bitcoin was first created, and Satoshi Nakamoto, the anonymous creator, participated in online forums. Some believe that certain wallets from this era may have been owned by Satoshi himself.

Last year in August, a similar wallet that had been inactive for nearly 14 years suddenly woke up and transferred 1005 BTC mined in 2010. This event caused a significant stir on social media, with many speculating that it was Satoshi’s wallet. Experts suggest that it is more likely associated with early miners or buyers who are simply seeking to profit from their holdings.

According to a report from Fortune, there are approximately 1.75 million Bitcoin wallets that have been inactive for over a decade. Many of these wallets contain a substantial amount of BTC that was likely acquired when the price of Bitcoin was in the double digits. Today, these holdings are worth billions of dollars, with a total value of $121 billion.

In recent years, there have been several instances of Satoshi-era wallets being activated only to transfer the BTC holdings to a new address. Some of these wallets have also been found to transfer their BTC to cryptocurrency exchanges, indicating a possible intention to cash out after nearly a decade of holding.

For example, in July 2023, a wallet that had been dormant for 11 years suddenly transferred $30 million worth of BTC. Then, in November of the same year, three Satoshi-era wallets that had been inactive for six years transferred $230 million worth of BTC. These three wallets were believed to be connected to the same individual or organization, as their last transaction took place on the same day, November 5, 2017.
