Doom on Dogecoin: 90s FPS Game Goes Cryptocurrency

Dogecoin, a cryptocurrency that was created based on a popular internet meme, has now become the host of the classic 1990s video game, Doom. This was made possible by a developer known as “Mini Doge” who used the Dogecoin Ordinals protocol to inscribe the game onto the Dogecoin blockchain. As a result, anyone can now play Doom on their computers or mobile phones by accessing the inscription link.

Doom, which was first released in 1993 and gained immense popularity, has been inscribed into the Dogecoin blockchain to celebrate its 30th anniversary. The version of the game found within the blockchain consists of nine levels and can be played without any legal issues. The Ordinals protocol was originally introduced on Bitcoin and later made its way to the Litecoin network after a user named Indigo Nakamoto offered a reward of $500 worth of Litecoin to anyone who could bring the protocol onto the blockchain. Following this, Doge Labs, a group of Dogecoin enthusiasts, enabled the deployment of the protocol on Dogecoin.

The Ordinals protocol allows users to inscribe various types of media, including images, videos, and audio, onto the Bitcoin and Dogecoin blockchains. This has led to an increase in the number of transactions on the Dogecoin network, with a record of 1.2 million transactions taking place in a 24-hour period on May 18.

Prior to Doom being hosted on Dogecoin, other developers had successfully inscribed a classic game emulator onto the Bitcoin blockchain using the Ordinals protocol. This emulator allowed users to play games from the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. The developers behind this project stated that their goal was to preserve these classic video games, which they referred to as “cultural digital artifacts,” for future generations.

With the integration of classic video games onto blockchain networks like Dogecoin and Bitcoin, more people will have the opportunity to enjoy these nostalgic games. The inscriptions serve as a way to preserve these games for the future, ensuring that they are accessible to subsequent generations.
