Ronin Unveils New zkEVM for Scaling Web3 Games
Ronin, a gaming blockchain, has announced that it will soon launch Ronin zkEVM, a zero-knowledge Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) layer-2 chain. This new chain is being developed using a customized version of the Polygon Chain Development Kit (CDK) by Sky Mavis. On June 18, the Ronin team revealed their plans to introduce this dedicated ZK chain to support a larger user base and assist game studio partners in expanding. This transition is expected to create a more open environment, promoting the inclusion of diverse gaming experiences on the network.
In addition to this new chain, the team plans to integrate a specialized Polygon ZK prover into Ronin. This will enable game studios to create their own zkEVM blockchains without the need to establish independent security and consensus mechanisms. The initiative aims to bolster the scalability of the network and accommodate the growing demands of the gaming ecosystem built around Ronin.
Ronin was initially created for the play-to-earn game, Axie Infinity. It has since evolved to support a wider range of gaming activities. As per the Ronin blockchain explorer, the network has already achieved 1.4 million daily active addresses. Jeff Zirlin, co-founder of Sky Mavis, the company behind Ronin, mentioned that the network is gearing up to manage billions of transactions. He pointed out that Ronin, being the largest gaming blockchain globally with 1.5 million daily active users, currently sustains up to 40 million transactions per day. The new zkEVM chain is critical to reaching future goals of managing 400 million or even four billion transactions.
The enhanced scalability brought by Ronin zkEVM is expected to fuel innovation and growth among partner studios. Several major blockchain games have already joined the Ronin network, capitalizing on its user base. For instance, the Web3 game Pixels has grown to over 4.4 million users since migrating to Ronin in October 2023. Besides improved scalability, Zirlin also highlighted other advantages of the new zkEVM chain, such as a smooth cross-chain experience and potentially higher staking rewards.
One significant aspect of this development is the ability for third-party developers to launch their own layer-2 blockchains on Ronin, paving the way for more games and players to join the network. This step is seen as part of Ronin’s broader mission to create a permissionless gaming environment. The objective is to encourage a diverse array of gaming experiences, ultimately fostering a more inclusive and expansive gaming ecosystem.
Trung Nguyen, CEO and co-founder of Sky Mavis, expressed that their ambition is to build a cohesive gaming ecosystem. This ecosystem would facilitate asset transfers, token swaps, and non-fungible token (NFT) trading between layer-1 and layer-2 games. Nguyen believes that Ronin zkEVM is pivotal in onboarding billions of gamers. This collaboration with Polygon represents a new chapter in the world of Web3 gaming.
Polygon’s co-founder, Sandeep Nailwal, also emphasized the significance of their CDK technology. He acknowledged that Ronin is at the forefront of integrating technological advancements with substantial distribution capabilities and user engagement. Nailwal believes that the support provided by the Polygon CDK will enhance Ronin’s gaming ecosystem, making the network increasingly appealing to game studios.
The launch of Ronin zkEVM marks a significant milestone for Ronin and its efforts to expand its gaming blockchain capabilities. The introduction of a zero-knowledge EVM layer-2 chain is set to enhance scalability, support more users, and facilitate the creation of new gaming experiences.
