T-Mobile’s parent company, Deutsche Telekom, has announced its plans to venture into Bitcoin (BTC) mining. This move marks an expansion of its ongoing involvement in the cryptocurrency sector. Since 2023, the telecommunications giant has been operating a Bitcoin node and managing Bitcoin Lightning nodes. Speaking at BTC Prague, Dirk Röder, who leads Web3 Infrastructure and Solutions at Deutsche Telekom, revealed the company’s engagement in Bitcoin activities. Röder hinted at new initiatives, teasing the audience with the term “digital monetary photosynthesis” without providing further details.
The company has a well-established presence in the Web3 ecosystem. Since June 2023, Deutsche Telekom has served as a Polygon validator. By doing so, the company has utilized its substantial infrastructure to secure new revenue channels and enhance the security of the Polygon network. As one of the 100 validators, Deutsche Telekom’s responsibilities include staking and validation services that bolster the Platform’s proof-of-stake (PoS) consensus mechanism.
Earlier this year, in February, Deutsche Telekom expanded its blockchain capabilities by partnering with Fetch.ai, a decentralized artificial intelligence platform. By becoming a validator on the Fetch.ai blockchain, Deutsche Telekom contributes to the platform’s AI-driven projects. These projects involve autonomous agents that deliver services across various domains including healthcare, automotive, supply chain management, and digital identities. The agents handle resource management, conduct transactions, and analyze traffic flows.
