Wife of Detained Binance Official Seeks Medical Care
Yuki Gambaryan, the spouse of Tigran Gambaryan, a detained official of Binance, has voiced serious concerns about her husband’s prolonged stay in Kuje prison despite a court ruling for his transfer to a hospital. Yuki revealed this troubling situation in a press release and stressed the urgent need for Nigerian authorities to adhere to the court order to facilitate appropriate medical treatment for Tigran.
Yuki pleaded with the Nigerian government, particularly President Bola Tinubu’s administration, to follow the court’s directive and allow her husband to be moved to a medical facility. She also appealed to the American government, seeking their intervention in securing Tigran’s release, given the pressing health concerns that have arisen due to his continued incarceration.
The situation became critical when Tigran Gambaryan collapsed during a court appearance before the Abuja Division of the Federal High Court, where he faces charges of money laundering. Prior to this incident, he had missed a separate court session on the same day concerning tax evasion charges brought by the Nigerian Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), although he managed to attend the hearing related to money laundering.
Mark Mordi, Tigran’s attorney, reported to the court on May 22 that his client was in poor health following the previous court session and continued to suffer from health complications. The legal team representing Binance Holdings, Aluko and Oyebode, has also shared their worries about Tigran’s health conditions, emphasizing the severity of the situation.
C.J. Caleb, a partner at Aluko and Oyebode, addressed these concerns in a letter to the Deputy Chief Registrar of the Federal High Court. Caleb highlighted that Tigran had been administered intravenous treatment for malaria and was also suffering from a throat infection. Caleb further noted that the Kuje Medium Correctional Facility is currently under renovation, rendering it an inadequate environment for proper medical care.
Tigran’s health issues have been escalating since his arrest three months ago during an official trip to Nigeria in February, along with his colleague Nadeem Anjarwalla. Binance, the cryptocurrency trading platform they represent, is under scrutiny in Nigeria, facing various allegations, including money laundering and tax evasion totaling $35 million.
The Nigerian authorities have intensified their crackdown on cryptocurrencies, arguing that such platforms facilitate financial speculation and manipulation of the naira. This has led to significant legal actions against Binance, including blocking access to its website for users in Nigeria.
In response to these actions, Binance has disabled its peer-to-peer (P2P) trading function and has exited the Nigerian market. The situation remains tense as Tigran Gambaryan’s health deteriorates, amidst a complex web of legal battles and regulatory challenges faced by Binance in Nigeria.
