Tech Agency Advancing AI Integration for Enhanced Security in Nigeria

The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) of Nigeria is pushing for the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into the country’s security framework to improve outcomes and boost its digital initiatives and global presence. NITDA’s Director-General, Kashifu Inuwa, discussed this proposal with the National Institute for Security Studies (NISS) Commandant, Alhaji A. S. Adeleke, in a closed-door meeting.

Inuwa highlighted the distinct approaches used by the security and information technology (IT) sectors in their respective fields. He emphasized the potential for collaboration between these sectors in leveraging technologies like AI and the Internet of Things (IoT) to enhance the security sector’s effectiveness. In line with this, NITDA expressed its readiness to establish meaningful partnerships, citing the alignment of this collaboration with the NITDA Strategic Roadmap and Action Plan (SRAP 2.0), which emphasizes building strategic partnerships and collaborations.

In November 2023, NITDA advocated for collaboration between itself, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), and financial institutions. The agency focused on harnessing emerging technologies such as AI and data analytics to deepen digital payments. Inuwa further explained the global significance of AI as a driving force, dispelled misconceptions surrounding it, and emphasized its role in simplifying tasks, providing prompt responses, and delivering effective solutions.

Responding to the discussions, NISS Commandant Alhaji A.S Adeleke expressed the institute’s eagerness to learn from NITDA’s experiences. Adeleke stated that NISS aims to gain valuable insights to prepare an executive brief for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR, with the objective of facilitating policy development and implementation.

NITDA is actively promoting AI growth in Nigeria through initiatives such as the National Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics (NCAIR) and the development of the National Artificial Intelligence Policy. In October, the Nigerian government announced grants of 5 million naira ($6,444) to 45 AI-focused startups and researchers as part of the Nigeria Artificial Intelligence Research Scheme. This scheme aims to encourage the widespread utilization of AI for driving economic progress in the country.
