This change aims to make it easier for people to experience the potential of AI. Users who don’t have an account will not be able to save their previous interactions. The rollout of this feature will happen gradually in different countries, starting with the United States. While many people celebrated this move as a step towards democratizing AI, there are concerns about potential abuse of the free ChatGPT 3.5 API by data scrapers, as pointed out by Simon Willison, the co-creator of Django.

The removal of the sign-up requirement for ChatGPT is seen by AI developers as an opportunity to develop newer large language models (LLM). Critics raise concerns about the various use cases surrounding the tool. Currently, ChatGPT has over 100 million weekly active users worldwide, and that number is expected to rise since users who were previously hesitant to share personal information with OpenAI can now use the tool with relative anonymity. It is worth noting that while ChatGPT 3.5 is not the most powerful free generative AI tool in the market, OpenAI’s decision might be aimed at discouraging users from turning to competitors.

According to data from Hugging Face, ChatGPT 3.5 ranks 16th globally in terms of its capabilities among free generative AI tools. Some other tools, such as Anthropic’s Claude S and Google DeepMind’s Gemini Pro, perform better. In a recent development, an AI robot named Iris secured a teaching position at a school in Kerala, India. Developed in collaboration with e-learning provider Makerlabs under the Atal Tinkering Lab (ATL) initiative by NITI Aayog, an Indian government agency, Iris can communicate in three languages and answer complex questions. This humanoid teacher, called Iris, aims to enhance the educational experience by adapting to each student’s needs and preferences.
