Binance Aids BtcTurk Probe, Freezes $5.3M in Stolen Funds
Cryptocurrency exchange Binance is reportedly assisting in the investigation of a malicious attack on the Turkish crypto exchange BtcTurk. According to Binance CEO Richard Teng, over $5 million in stolen funds have been frozen so far. Teng confirmed this in a post on June 22, stating, “Binance is assisting BtcTurk with investigations and has frozen over $5.3M in stolen funds so far.”
BtcTurk, which services more than 5 million users, disclosed that the attack mainly impacted holdings in its hot wallets. These wallets are software-based and connected to the internet, making them more susceptible to hacking attempts compared to cold storage, which is offline. The Turkish exchange assured users that only a small portion of the balances in 10 different cryptocurrencies stored in hot wallets were affected. The majority of their assets, which are held in cold storage, remain secure, as stated by BtcTurk.
Richard Teng updated his 299,800 followers by saying that Binance’s investigations and security teams are working around the clock to protect the cryptocurrency ecosystem from bad actors. He pledged to provide any further updates as the investigation proceeds, aiming to keep the community informed.
Binance’s proactive involvement has been commended by several members of the blockchain and cryptocurrency community. Blockchain investigator ZackXBT lauded Binance for its efforts in assisting other exchanges suffering security incidents. In a post on June 22, he underlined that “Binance gets crucified by the media when in reality their security team does more for victims and goes out of their way to assist in incident response.”
Despite the incident, BtcTurk’s CEO Özgür Güneri has remained silent on public forums regarding the attack. This event occurred shortly after a similar exploit affected the Switzerland-based crypto exchange Lykke, which halted withdrawals following a breach on June 4. The breach led to a loss of $19.5 million in crypto assets.
Blockchain security researcher SomaXBT accused Lykke of trying to cover up the security breach. SomaXBT stated that Lykke had been exploited and suffered a significant loss, but the team had attempted to keep this information hidden from the public.
