Rapper Lil Pump Tattoos 'Solana' on Forehead After Selling Tokens

American rapper Gazzy Garcia, who goes by the stage name Lil Pump, recently took to Instagram to showcase what appears to be a tattoo featuring the blockchain platform Solana. In his post, Lil Pump revealed that he has already sold his Solana (SOL) tokens. He posed a question to his more than 14 million followers, asking for their thoughts on his new tattoo. “Like my new tats? I sold my SOL,” he wrote. Lil Pump gained significant fame with his 2017 hit single “Gucci Gang,” which reached the third spot on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart.

Reactions to Lil Pump’s new tattoo poured in from the internet community. On Instagram, many fans expressed their displeasure. One individual lamented the loss of the “old pump,” while another commented on the seeming absurdity of removing forehead tattoos only to replace them with “some dumber ones.” Some users even debated the authenticity of the tattoo, while others speculated that the stunt might positively impact Solana’s market value. A comment enthusiastically proclaimed, “To the moon! Gucci gain, Gucci gain, Gucci gain!”

The reactions on the social media platform X were even more critical. A user named Trader Mayne didn’t mince words when criticizing Lil Pump’s involvement in the crypto world. “Your crypto grifts are as shitty as the music you make. The good news is you are so bad at both you can’t make money doing either,” Mayne wrote.

This tattoo revelation comes amidst a broader context of declining celebrity-endorsed crypto projects. In early June, it became apparent that many tokens released by celebrities had suffered significant losses. For example, crypto assets promoted by Caitlyn Jenner, American rapper Rich the Kid, and Nigerian singer Davido all plunged after initial gains. Similarly, tokens associated with Floyd Mayweather and rappers Moneybagg Yo and Trippie Red saw a staggering drop of around 90%.

Despite these setbacks, celebrities continue to dive into the world of crypto. On June 11, the provocative social media personality Andrew Tate endorsed a Solana-based memecoin called Daddy Tate (DADDY). Surprisingly, Tate’s token performance surpassed that of Iggy Azalea’s crypto project, despite allegations of insider trading shadowing its release.

Amid this celebrity-driven memecoin craze, notable figures like Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin have voiced their concerns. Buterin has been critical about the financialization of tokens attributed to public figures, especially when the primary outcome seems to be personal financial gain rather than societal benefit. According to Buterin, the financialization of assets might only be justified if it contributes to meaningful societal improvements, such as enhancing healthcare systems or fostering artistic and creative ventures.

Lil Pump’s new Solana tattoo and his subsequent Instagram post have sparked mixed reactions. While some view it as a trivial or misguided choice, others see potential in its market implications. The broader scenario of celebrity-backed crypto tokens reveals a volatile and uncertain market, where initial hype often fades into significant losses. The trend persists, with more public figures joining the crypto bandwagon, despite evident risks and criticisms from influential voices in the industry.
